Drivers traveling through Rhea and Cumberland Counties should prepare for lane closures and possible delays next week as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) conducts a series of bridge inspections to ensure structural safety.
On Monday, September 8, the SR 30 bridge over Richland Creek in Rhea County will be inspected. Eastbound lanes on SR 30 will be closed between 2nd Avenue and Delaware Avenue/Back Valley Road from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Flaggers will be on-site to help direct traffic around the work zone.
On Tuesday, September 9, TDOT will inspect the I-40 bridge over the Obed River in Cumberland County. The right lane and shoulder of I-40 East will close from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by I-40 West from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, September 10, similar inspections will take place on the I-40 bridge over Drowning Creek at mile marker 315. Lane closures will follow the same schedule as Tuesday’s inspections.
TDOT urges drivers to expect delays and use caution while passing through these areas. In case of bad weather or other issues, inspection schedules may change.
For real-time updates, motorists can use the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511. TDOT also reminds drivers to follow the Move Over Law, which requires giving space to highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violations can result in fines and even jail time.
