IOWA — Alexandra Marie Frost, 27, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday, Aug. 29, for injecting her 2-year-old son with insulin, which made him dangerously ill.
Frost pleaded guilty in June to child endangerment resulting in bodily injury and administering harmful substances, according to the Johnson County Attorney’s Office.
The case surfaced in March 2023 when Frost brought her toddler to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
A criminal complaint revealed that the boy had critically low blood sugar levels requiring medical intervention, including glucose administration, while lab results showed his insulin levels were abnormally high.
Doctors noticed anomalies in his condition and suspected Munchausen syndrome by proxy — a disorder where a caregiver causes or fabricates illness in someone else.
The boy’s glucose levels dropped suddenly and then stabilized, prompting hospital staff to install a camera in the child’s room on March 13, 2023.
The next day, footage allegedly showed Frost holding a syringe and injecting her son’s foot.
“After injecting [her son’s] foot, Frost walks to where the ‘SHARPS’ container is located and appeared to place the syringe into the container,” the warrant stated. “Prior to the injections, [the victim] appeared calm, but after Frost injected his foot, he became agitated and screamed in pain.”
Medical experts confirmed that injecting insulin dangerously lowers glucose levels and can lead to serious health issues, including death.
Investigators determined Frost was the only person consistently with her son at the hospital. After the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services removed the child from her care, his glucose levels stabilized, and he had no further complications.
