PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is moving forward with plans to build a new road connecting Pikeville to US 119, bypassing the current Town Mountain Road.
The project is designed to improve roadway geometrics, reduce hazardous rockfalls, boost capacity, and provide a more direct alternate route into downtown Pikeville.
Public Input at Early Stages
During a public meeting Thursday at The Troubadour, residents, property owners, and business leaders reviewed project maps and asked questions about the proposed roadway.
“When we have a project that’s really in the early planning stages like this one here, we really just need the public’s help,” said KYTC spokesperson Shantana Woodward.
The open house-style event gave locals the chance to confirm property records and share feedback. Woodward emphasized that these meetings are crucial for explaining the project’s purpose and hearing community input.
A Safer, Straighter Route
The proposed two-lane, 2.5-mile stretch will feature safety lanes and truck passing lanes, offering a smoother, more direct connection to US 119. It will eliminate many of the sharp curves and rockslide-prone sections that have long caused safety concerns.
“With this new alignment, we are able to take out a lot of the areas where we have significant rock fall dangers, and then those curves too,” Woodward said.
The current Town Mountain Road will remain open and eventually tie into the new route through additional access points.
Growth and Development Potential
Beyond safety, officials say the project could unlock new development opportunities. Materials removed during construction may be repurposed to prepare sites for future projects along the corridor.
“With Pikeville growing and this being a connector on 119 into downtown, we’re getting a lot more motorists and a lot more traffic,” Woodward explained. “So, ultimately, it comes to a safer project and a better driving experience.”
Public Comment Window Open
Some relocations are expected, but the project remains in its early planning phase. KYTC is encouraging public comments until October 11, 2025.
All display boards, handouts, and comment forms are available on the KYTC District 12 website. Written comments will be added to the official record and may be requested through Open Records Requests at:
