KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — The 23-year-old shooter accused of killing two children and injuring over a dozen others during a Minneapolis Catholic school shooting reportedly has ties to Kentucky.
Authorities say Robin Westman allegedly used multiple weapons to fire shots through the windows of Annunciation Catholic School before taking his own life. Investigators confirmed that Westman had no prior criminal history.
According to the Associated Press, Westman’s uncle is Bob Heleringer, a longtime attorney and former Republican state representative from Louisville, who served the 33rd District from 1980 to 2002. Heleringer now writes for the Courier-Journal and Kentucky Lantern.
Heleringer told the AP he did not know Westman well and hadn’t seen him in three to four years. Calling the attack an “unspeakable tragedy,” he said, “We’re praying for my sister and her other children and also, obviously, for these poor, poor children.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that Westman posted a manifesto on YouTube before the shooting. The video has since been removed and is under review by investigators. Authorities have not yet determined whether Westman had any direct connection to Annunciation Catholic School.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear expressed condolences, saying, “American children should be safe and feel safe in their schools, yet today our country faces more heartbreak as we learn of another school shooting, this time in Minneapolis. Britainy and I are praying for the families, students, and teachers affected. To my friend, Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky is holding all of Minnesota in our hearts.”
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington also issued a statement, expressing prayerful solidarity with the victims’ families and the affected community.
