CLEVELAND, Ohio — Northeast Ohio will enjoy a beautiful start to the short workweek on Tuesday before much-needed rain arrives later this week.

High pressure will keep the weather calm through midweek, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows on both nights will drop into the mid to low 50s.

Rain chances rise late Wednesday night into Thursday morning as a strong cold front pushes from west to east across the region. The front will likely produce a narrow band of showers, with rainfall totals averaging between half an inch and one inch.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Cleveland said a rumble of thunder and heavier localized rainfall are possible, though the risk of severe weather remains low.

Most of the rain is expected Thursday morning, after which the region will dry out quickly. Sunshine returns Thursday afternoon, but temperatures will be cooler, with highs only in the mid-60s.

Thursday night will feel especially chilly, with lows dropping into the 40s in some areas.

Friday will warm up into the 70s, but another wave of low pressure is expected to form along the front, briefly increasing rain chances again.

Additionally, forecasters noted that Ashtabula and Lake counties could see some lake-effect rain showers behind the front starting Friday night.

Any rainfall will be helpful, as August ended about 1.64 inches below normal, according to weather records.

September typically brings the most rain to Northeast Ohio, thanks to tropical remnants moving inland from the Atlantic. On average, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport records 3.93 inches of rain during the month.

Drier, cooler weekend ahead

High pressure is expected to build in by the weekend, bringing drier and cooler conditions across Northeast Ohio.

Some lake-effect showers may linger across the snow belt early Saturday before skies clear. Highs on Saturday and Sunday will stay in the 60s, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s both nights.
