Indianapolis, IN — Hoosiers may get a rare opportunity to witness the Northern Lights tonight, as favorable conditions are expected across much of Indiana.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a forecast for a G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm. This event could push the aurora borealis much farther south than usual, making it potentially visible across parts of the Midwest, including Indiana.

Mostly clear skies and overnight lows in the 50s will create ideal conditions for viewing. The best time to watch will be from late this evening into the early morning hours. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends finding dark, rural locations away from city lights for the clearest views.

Experts note that the intensity of the aurora may vary, but the highest chances of seeing vivid colors are expected around midnight. Stargazers may also want to use long-exposure cameras and tripods to capture the phenomenon more clearly.

Residents planning to head outside are advised to dress warmly, as cooler nighttime temperatures are expected across the region.
