KENTUCKY — A hiker died after falling in the Red River Gorge, officials confirmed.
Powell County Search & Rescue reported that emergency crews responded around 4 p.m. Saturday to Whittleton Arch, where the hiker fell nearly 40 feet from the top onto rocks below.
Officials said the hiker was alert but critically injured when first responders reached him. After a challenging rescue through rough terrain, crews transported him to the Middlefork Fire Department, where a helicopter airlifted him to UK Hospital. He later died from his injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the hiker’s identity.
