FRANKFORT, Ky. — More than $2 million in federal funding is now available to help support domestic violence prevention efforts across Kentucky.
Gov. Andy Beshear announced last week that local organizations can begin applying for funding under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The money will be used to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking while supporting survivors across the state.

One organization benefiting from this funding is GreenHouse17, a Lexington-based nonprofit serving 17 counties in central Kentucky. The group provides essential resources for victims, including counseling, shelter, and legal advocacy. Executive Director Darlene Thomas emphasized the funding’s importance, noting that GreenHouse17 assists more than 6,000 men, women, and children each year.
“I wish it were about 50 million available across the whole state. But we are grateful, and we will apply for what is available,” Thomas said. “Having this funding allows us to continue doing this critical work.”
GreenHouse17 also operates a 24-hour crisis line and provides emergency shelters for victims. Thomas highlighted that over 30,000 protective orders are filed annually in Kentucky, and having an advocate present in court significantly increases a survivor’s chances of following through with safety measures.

With an advocate present: About 80% of survivors follow through.

Without an advocate: Only about 20% follow through.
Since Gov. Beshear took office, the Beshear-Coleman administration has awarded more than $149 million to victim service agencies statewide.
“We’re just really grateful for the advocacy of our legislature and our government that continues to ensure that funding comes to Kentucky to support domestic violence survivors and their children,” Thomas added.
