NORTH CAROLINA — Authorities are investigating the death of a 62-year-old male inmate at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
According to the Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office, a detention officer called for a medical emergency Sunday around 5:35 a.m. after finding the inmate unresponsive. Lifesaving measures were performed until medical personnel arrived, but despite efforts from Mecklenburg EMS and Charlotte Fire, the man was pronounced dead at approximately 6:13 a.m. He had been in custody since June 2025.
Sheriff Garry McFadden issued a statement expressing condolences and acknowledging the difficulty of losing a life while in custody.
Authorities stated that additional information will be released once the inmate’s family has been notified.
The State Bureau of Investigation will lead a thorough investigation into the in-custody death, while the medical examiner works to determine the exact cause of death.
