You can run and you can hide, but the long arm of the law always catches up. The US Marshals have once again proven their unmatched success in tracking down fugitives, capturing a Maine suspect who was hiding in Missouri.
The United States Marshals Service announced this week that they arrested 51-year-old Gregory Heimann, who had been on the run for over a year. Heimann was wanted by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General on charges of making false statements. Authorities initially believed Heimann had drowned after he left his Maine residence and attempted to cross into Canada using a canoe. Multiple agencies searched for days, but no body was found.
Despite the uncertainty, the Marshals refused to give up. Their persistence paid off when they received a tip on August 21, 2025, about a man resembling Heimann near an Amtrak station in La Plata, Missouri. When confronted, Heimann gave officers a false name but was eventually identified and taken into custody.
Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Josh Taylor of the USMS District of Maine said:
“This investigation underscores the extent of commitment that our Task Force and its partners will go, pursuing those who evade law enforcement. Fugitives will find no refuge. If you’re wanted, regardless of location, we will find you, you will be apprehended, and you will be brought to justice!”
