OHIO — Cleveland Police launched an investigation after a newborn baby girl was found dead early Friday morning on the city’s West Side.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the infant was discovered on August 23 in the 2200 block of West 73rd Street in the West Boulevard neighborhood.
Police said officers responded to the area around 2:17 a.m. for a suspected overdose. When they arrived, Cleveland EMS was already treating a 39-year-old woman who appeared to be experiencing an altered mental state caused by an unknown substance.
While assisting at the scene, officers learned the woman had recently given birth and immediately began searching the area. They later found the baby inside a cloth shopping bag on a driveway, where she was pronounced dead.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment. The medical examiner will determine the infant’s cause of death.
No further details have been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
